Neurosurgeon and migraine treatment specialist, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Ilya Almazov, explained to SE that the best way to relieve a headache is to identify its cause and type. Headaches caused by fatigue, dehydration, or lack of sleep can often be treated independently without consulting specialists. According to the doctor, it is usually sufficient to establish a regular routine and drink an adequate amount of water.
To quickly alleviate a headache, Almazov suggests applying an ice pack wrapped in a towel to the head or neck. Heat can be equally effective: it can be applied to the head, neck, or even hands and feet. Additional methods to relieve tension and headache include massage, acupuncture, a large glass of water, or a caffeinated drink. “Among medications, over-the-counter options such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin, as well as triptans with caffeine, receptor antagonists, lasmiditan, dihydroergotamine, and ergotamine are permissible,” the neurosurgeon advised.
For conservative treatment methods, Almazov recommended peripheral nerve blocks, botulinum therapy, and neuromodulation. “However, conservative methods only provide short-term relief from migraines. With advanced surgical intervention, it’s possible to eliminate the root cause and get rid of migraines permanently,” the expert stated.
Almazov advised seeing a doctor if the headache is very severe or occurs suddenly, if it appears after a head injury or fall, or if there are symptoms such as fever, rash, confusion, seizures, double vision, weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking. “Almost everyone experiences headaches from time to time, and many don’t need to worry. But if headaches disrupt daily life, it’s essential to consult a specialist—either a neurologist or neurosurgeon,” Almazov concluded.
