Cavities are every child’s nightmare and one of the most common dental issues. Countless tears have been shed in the dentist’s chair facing the drill and anesthetic syringe! But who would have thought that cavities could be not only an enemy to teeth but also potentially to one’s waistline?
Are dental diseases related to excess weight? We explored this with dentist Anastasia Belolipetskaya.
Is There a Link Between Dental Diseases and Excess Weight?
There is no direct link between cavities and obesity. People of all body types, whether overweight or underweight, can develop dental problems. However, unhealthy teeth and gums can influence dietary choices. To avoid the discomfort or pain of chewing hard foods, people often opt for processed foods — like canned vegetables instead of fresh ones. The sauces, salt, and sugar commonly added to preserved foods increase their calorie content, which can lead to weight gain over time.
What Happens if Dental Health Is Neglected?
Untreated cavities can lead to inflammatory complications in the pulp (the connective tissue inside the tooth) and other serious problems.
- Chronic Inflammation Develops
Inflammation is a critical link between oral diseases and weight gain. Inflammatory proteins are the immune system’s response to infection. With prolonged, chronic inflammation, as seen in dental and gum diseases, the body releases significantly more inflammatory proteins. - Hormonal Balance Is Affected
A high level of inflammatory proteins can disrupt the functioning of certain hormones, such as leptin — the hormone responsible for signaling fullness. Leptin helps regulate energy balance and maintain body weight, so its suppression can disrupt these processes. - Chronic Fatigue Sets In
Inflammation can also contribute to chronic fatigue, making it harder to stay motivated to exercise. Constant resources are required to combat infection, draining the body over time.
So, while cavities may not directly cause weight gain, the side effects of poor dental health can certainly play a role in overall wellness and weight management.
